Feet to Meters Converter translates imperial lengths to metric and vice versa, with optional split inputs for feet+inches and meters+centimeters.
About feet. A foot (ft) is an imperial/US customary unit widely used on drawings and specifications in the US and some international projects. One foot equals 12 inches. Decimal feet are common in surveying; architectural practice often mixes feet and inches.
About inches. An inch (in) is 1/12 of a foot. For practicality in entry, the tool accepts any inch value and automatically normalizes values ≥ 12 in to feet + remaining inches (e.g., 5 ft + 24 in → 7 ft 0 in).
About meters. A meter (m) is the SI unit of length. It is standard across most engineering disciplines and on international job sites. For granular entry, the tool also supports meters + centimeters with automatic normalization of ≥ 100 cm to meters + remainder.
Calculation. The relationship between imperial and metric length is linear and fixed by definition: one international foot equals exactly 0.3048 meters. All other routes (feet+inches or meters+centimeters) first compose a single length on one side, then apply the linear factor to obtain the equivalent on the other side.
Formulas
- m = ft × 0.3048 (feet → meters)
- ft = m × 3.280839895 (meters → feet)
- ft_total = ft + (in ÷ 12) (compose detailed imperial)
- m_total = m + (cm ÷ 100) (compose detailed metric)
- in = (ft_total − ⌊ft_total⌋) × 12 (decompose to feet + inches)
- cm = (m_total − ⌊m_total⌋) × 100 (decompose to meters + centimeters)
Examples
- 10.5 ft → m: 10.5 × 0.3048 = 3.2004 m (≈ 3.200 m)
- 3.2 m → ft: 3.2 × 3.280839895 = 10.4987 ft (≈ 10.499 ft → 10 ft 5.98 in)
- 5 ft 9 in → m: 5 + (9 ÷ 12) = 5.75 ft; 5.75 × 0.3048 = 1.7526 m (≈ 1.753 m)
