Length Units

Lengths in architecture and construction are typically measured in either metric or imperial units. Choosing the correct unit system is essential for accurate drawings, quantity takeoffs, and communication between teams across different regions.

Metric units are standard in most countries and include millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), and kilometers (km). Imperial units are common in the United States and parts of the construction industry and include inches (in), feet (ft), yards (yd), and miles (mi).

It’s important not to confuse imperial vs metric conversions with conversions within each system. Converting between inches and feet is not the same as converting between inches and millimeters. You’ll find both types of calculators below.

Use these calculators to convert:

Metric to Metric:
Millimeters (mm) to Centimeters (cm)
Centimeters (cm) to Meters (m)

Imperial to Imperial:
Inches (in) to Feet (ft)
Feet (ft) to Yards (yd)

Metric to Imperial:
Meters (m) to Feet (ft)
Millimeters (mm) to Inches (in)

Imperial to Metric:
