Square Feet to Square Meters Converter

Square Feet to Square Meters Converter lets you translate areas between ft² and m², or compute area from length × width in either imperial (ft+in) or metric (m+cm) inputs.

About units. This tool supports both imperial and metric inputs. Areas are shown in square feet (ft²) and square meters (m²), and dimensions can be entered as decimal feet/inches or meters/centimeters, depending on workflow.

About square feet. A square foot (ft²) is an imperial unit commonly found in real-estate schedules, US construction documents, and FF&E programs. One ft² equals the area of a square 1 foot by 1 foot.

About square meters. A square meter (m²) is the SI unit for area, standard across international projects and most technical specifications. One m² equals the area of a square 1 meter by 1 meter.

About workflows. Use Simple when you already know the area and want it in the other unit. Use Dimensions to enter length and width (ft+in or m+cm) and get the area in both unit systems. Switching between imperial and metric dimension entry preserves your values and recalculates the same geometry.

Conversion. Area values are related by a fixed factor: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, therefore 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² and 1 m² = 10.763910416 ft². When working from dimensions, total length and width are first normalized to a single unit (feet or meters), then multiplied to obtain area; the area is then expressed in the alternate unit via the same fixed factor.

Formulas.

  • Direct area (ft² → m²): m² = ft² × 0.09290304 (convert given area in ft² to m²)
  • Direct area (m² → ft²): ft² = m² × 10.763910416 (convert given area in m² to ft²)
  • Dimensions (imperial entry):
    Lft = ft + in/12,   Wft = ft + in/12
    Aft² = Lft × Wft,   A = Aft² × 0.09290304
    (compute area from ft+in)
  • Dimensions (metric entry):
    Lm = m + cm/100,   Wm = m + cm/100
    A = Lm × Wm,   Aft² = A × 10.763910416
    (compute area from m+cm)

Examples.

  1. Direct area: 250 ft² → 250 × 0.09290304 = 23.226 m² (approx.)
  2. Dimensions (imperial): 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft 0 in → L = 12.5 ft, W = 10.0 ft → A = 125.0 ft² → 11.613 m² (approx.)
  3. Dimensions (metric): 4 m 20 cm × 3 m 50 cm → L = 4.20 m, W = 3.50 m → A = 14.70 m² → 158.23 ft² (approx.)
