Earth Volume Calculator calculates earth volumes for common shapes—rectangle, trench, circular pit, and triangular prism. It also provides mass, bulking, compacted fill, and truck loads.
About shapes and dimensions. Choose a shape, enter length/width/depth (or diameter/base/height). The tool holds an SI state (m, m², m³) and converts input/output when toggling imperial.
About density and mass. Bulk density converts volume to mass: m = ρ × V. Typical soils range ~1.6–2.0 t/m³ (100–125 lb/ft³). Always use project-specific values when available.
About bulking and compaction. In-situ → loose (bulked) for hauling: Vloose = V(1 + swell). For compacted backfill: Vcomp = V/(1 − comp). Truck trips ≈ ⌈Vloose / truck capacity⌉.
Calculation. Each shape has a direct geometric formula for volume. By entering basic dimensions, the calculator derives in-situ volume, which can then be adjusted for bulking, compaction, and truck capacity.
- Rectangle: V = L × W × D.
- Trench: V = L × D × (Wtop + Wbot)/2.
- Circular pit: V = π(D/2)² × Depth.
- Triangular prism: V = L × (B × H / 2).
Examples.
- Rect: 20 × 10 × 0.8 = 160 m³.
- Trench: 30 × 1.2 × (1.0 + 0.6)/2 = 28.8 m³.
- Circular: D = 6 m, Depth = 2 m ⇒ π × 3² × 2 ≈ 56.5 m³.
